From the salt flat to the ship: the export logistics of Argentine lithium

Every ton of lithium carbonate travels hundreds of kilometers across the mountains before reaching a port. Much of the sector's competitiveness is decided along that route.

A product born at 4,000 meters above sea level

The salt flats that concentrate Argentina's lithium production —mainly in Catamarca, Jujuy and Salta— sit on the Puna, a high plateau that frequently exceeds 3,500 to 4,200 meters above sea level. There, starting from relatively low-cost brines, plants produce battery-grade or technical-grade lithium carbonate, which is packed into roughly one-ton big bags and palletized for shipment.

Argentina has established itself as the world's fifth-largest producer and aims to climb the rankings as projects under construction mature. Yet its geological and brine cost advantage can be eroded along the way: between the plant gate and a ship's hold lie hundreds of kilometers of mountain roads, international border crossings and port terminals, each with its own cost and its own operational risk.

The first stage: from the salt flat to the trunk road

Carbonate leaves the salt flat by truck on roads that, in many stretches, are still gravel or narrow. Altitude, gradients and weather events —winter snowfalls, summer floods— condition the speed and predictability of this first leg. A detour or a closure can add days to transit and raise the freight cost per kilometer traveled.

From the salt flats, the cargo connects with trunk corridors that steer it toward two main exits: the Pacific ports in northern Chile and the Atlantic ports along Argentina's coast. The choice is not trivial: it depends on the salt flat's location, each producer's commercial agreements, and the availability of shipping services at each terminal.

The Pacific route: proximity with trade-offs

For several projects in Salta, Jujuy and Catamarca, the ports of northern Chile —such as Antofagasta, Mejillones or Iquique— are the natural exit in terms of distance. The crossing is made through high Andean passes, such as Paso de Jama or Paso de Sico, which bring the cargo closer to the Pacific over routes typically in the order of 400 to 800 kilometers depending on origin.

Proximity comes with trade-offs. Border crossings are subject to closures due to snow during winter, to limited operating hours, and to the timing of customs controls in two countries. Binational coordination, the capacity of integrated control areas, and the seasonality of the weather become critical variables for sustaining a stable export flow.

The Atlantic route: distance and logistical sovereignty

The Atlantic alternative directs cargo toward terminals on Argentina's coast, with distances that can comfortably exceed 1,500 kilometers from the Puna. The route is longer and therefore more expensive in overland freight, but it offers a strategic advantage: it keeps the entire logistics chain within national territory, without depending on international crossings or on customs coordination with a third country.

This route gains appeal to the extent that rail connections in northern Argentina are strengthened. When available and in good condition, rail reduces the cost per ton over long stretches compared to trucks and relieves congested roads. The modernization of the northern railway system's branch lines is, in this sense, a key piece for balancing the scales between the two exits.

Bottlenecks that erode competitiveness

Beyond the chosen route, the sector faces recurring bottlenecks. The condition of access roads to the salt flats, the near-exclusive dependence on road transport, the limited capacity of some border crossings, and the intermittent availability of rail service raise logistics costs and reduce predictability. Added to this are administrative times: export procedures, customs controls, and the coordination of shipping windows at the terminals.

In a product where the international price is volatile, every dollar of logistics overcost per ton weighs on margins. That is why transport infrastructure is not an operational detail but a determining factor of profitability. The advantage of having low-cost brines can be lost if the carbonate takes too long, or costs too much, to reach the ship.

The Argentine challenge: turning geography into an advantage

Argentina starts from a demanding geographical condition: production at altitude, far from ports, and in a region of historically neglected infrastructure. Turning that disadvantage into a competitive export platform requires sustained investment in roads, border crossings, rail and port capacity, along with fine coordination among the national government, provinces and private operators.

The incentive framework in force since 2024, designed to attract large investments, opens a window to finance part of that infrastructure. The question that will define the coming decade is whether the country manages to match production growth with logistics up to the task. On this depends whether Puna lithium reaches the world not only in volume, but also with the cost and predictability that an increasingly competitive global market demands.
