ESG and IRMA: How Global Standards Shape Argentine Lithium

Investors and automakers no longer buy just lithium: they buy environmental and social traceability. Certifications like IRMA are becoming the key to accessing long-term contracts.

From Price to a Sustainability Passport

For years, the conversation around lithium revolved almost exclusively around price, mineral grade and operating costs. That framework remains relevant, but it is no longer enough. Major buyers —automakers, battery manufacturers and investment funds— have added a second layer of requirements that acts as a pre-filter: environmental, social and governance performance, known by its acronym ESG.

In practice, a project may have excellent economic fundamentals and still be dropped from a supply contract shortlist if it cannot demonstrate how it manages water, how it engages with communities and how it controls the integrity of its value chain. Lithium is no longer sold by the ton alone: today it is sold with an attached sustainability passport.

What Investors and Automakers Demand

Automakers betting on electrification need assurance that their batteries come from responsible sources, partly out of conviction and partly due to regulation. Rules such as the European Union's Battery Regulation introduce due diligence and carbon footprint requirements that flow upstream, all the way to the producer of lithium carbonate or hydroxide. What begins as a requirement for the carmaker ends up conditioning the operator of a salt flat in the Puna.

On the financial side, institutional funds apply ESG criteria to allocate capital and assess risk. A poorly managed environmental liability or an unresolved social conflict translate into higher financing costs, tougher covenants or outright inability to close the deal. Sustainability has become an access variable for capital as much as for reputation.

IRMA: What It Is and Why It Matters

The Initiative for Responsible Mining Assurance (IRMA) is an independent audit standard for responsible mining that assesses an operation's performance across four broad pillars: business integrity, planning for positive social and environmental responsibility, environmental responsibility and social responsibility. Its differentiator is multi-stakeholder governance: companies, buyers, communities, workers and civil society organizations all take part, which gives it credibility over purely self-declared audits.

IRMA does not issue a binary pass or fail; instead it verifies the level of compliance against its criteria and publishes the results. That transparency is precisely what buyers seek: not a certification of convenience, but verifiable evidence of how a deposit actually operates. That is why several automakers have started to reference IRMA in their sourcing policies.

Certification as a Key to Contracts

The long-term contract, or offtake, is the heart of the lithium business: it gives the producer revenue predictability and the buyer security of supply. Increasingly, these agreements incorporate ESG requirements as an entry condition or as a continuous improvement clause, with periodic audits and penalties for non-compliance.

In this context, moving toward standards like IRMA is no longer a marketing gesture but a strategic investment. An operation that can display traceability and independent auditing gains access to a universe of premium buyers willing to sign longer contracts and, in some cases, to recognize differential prices. Certification acts as a key that opens doors which would otherwise remain closed.

The Specific Challenge of Brines

Lithium from Puna brines has a structural cost advantage over hard rock, but it faces particular scrutiny on one sensitive point: water. Operations take place in high-altitude, arid and fragile basins, where the perception and real management of the water resource largely define the social license to operate. ESG standards focus precisely there.

This makes transparent hydrogeological monitoring, audited water balances and genuine dialogue with Indigenous communities decisive factors. Direct lithium extraction technologies, which promise to reduce water consumption and the footprint of evaporation ponds, gain appeal not only for efficiency but because they improve a project's ESG profile before buyers and investors.

Argentina and the Puna Against the Global Standard

Argentina, the world's fifth-largest lithium producer with a steady expansion of capacity in Catamarca, Salta and Jujuy, plays this game on two boards at once. On one hand, frameworks such as the RIGI in force since 2024 seek to attract large-scale investment with fiscal and currency predictability. On the other, that investment arrives with ESG expectations that no tax incentive can replace.

For Puna operations, aligning with standards like IRMA is not an arbitrary external imposition but the condition for joining the most demanding and profitable value chains of the energy transition. The challenge is to turn the cost advantage of brines into a comprehensive advantage combining competitiveness, water stewardship and solid community relations. That, increasingly, will be the true differentiator of Argentine lithium in the global market.
